Building your own Ethical Closet
22 April
One of the many things you could do in achieving a sustainable lifestyle is building an ethical wardrobe. Yup, eco-friendly fashion is not just about not faux leather. But first, let us define Ethical and Sustainable Fashion.
‘Ethical Fashion' is a concept of inclusion and awareness; garments that have been produced consciously with regards of the industry's issues which includes living wages, working conditions and as well as sustainability.
‘Ethical’ referring to people and ‘Sustainable’ referring to the environment.
1. Downsizing Your Wardrobe
One of the things that I want to stress out is the amount of clothes one owns. When you want to transition into a more ethical and sustainable wardrobe, start by sorting your clothes and get rid of anything you know you won't get a lot of use of in the future. Find a new home for your clothes by giving them to others who might need them. Personally I usually donate my clothes to our local community and at any H&M store.
2. Refurbishing and Repairing Your Clothes
Another effective way of sustainable fashion is by altering your old clothes into a more trendy piece you know you'll like better. This is a good way of not adding to the million of clothes that fills dumpsites and wasteland. Upcycling your old clothes comes in many ways such as altering the hem of your archaic-looking jeans and cutting your shirts into crop tops. I actually made a post previously on how I refurbish my Dad's graphic shirts into trendy ones.
3. Thrift Shopping
There is no shame in buying thrifted clothing pieces. They are sustainable and to be honest more unique. If you thrift clothes, you would most likely not bump into someone with the exact same piece you're wearing, not to mention it's cheaper and you saved money. Mass produced clothing comes side by side with fast fashion culture and we don't want that. Remember that our main goal here is to recycle and make full use of our garments.
4. Prioritizing Versatility and Durability
I am all for quality and functional clothes and almost everything. Concentrating on versatile and durable garments means you're saving resources and money in the long-run. For example, I have this basic gray t-shirt I bought for a not so cheap price but *take note* I have been using it for yeaaaaaaaars and the fabric is still soft and since it is a basic gray shirt, I could always dress it up or down. If I ever I bought a lower quality shirt for a cheaper price, I would've probably repurchased a new one within a span of a year. Ya get what I mean?
5. Supporting Ethical & Sustainable Brands
I know that ethical brands coequal with a higher price range but If you can afford it, why not support it. The very thought of ethical fashion in the first place is making sure that the entire production of the garment you're buying is in a high ethical standard, and that is why prices could go really up, bu then again, ethical fashion could be achieved in many ways, even on a budget.
6. Finding your Style
It may sound vague but knowing your style will greatly help in narrowing down the clothes you should gravitate to rather than impulsively buying a shirt because you think it's cute, but end up deep down in your closet because it doesn't really suit you or your other clothing pieces. When you have a general perspective of your personal style, it will help you pick clothes that you would surely love.
Personal Tip: Having a grasp of a colour palette you like the most, the vibe you are going for and also knowing what flatters your body type/shape is basically the three steps of picking the right clothes for you. For example, If you already figured out your wardrobe colour scheme and vibe, you could now then add other pieces of the same colours but in different silhouettes and textures.
7. Taking Care Of Your Clothes
The most important part of it all is taking good care of your garments. Loving your clothes and putting them in the best care possible would prolong the quality of your clothes which means you could use them for a very long time debunking fast fashion. This very step will cause you to buy less therefore saving money and saving nature as well.
And that is it for my Earth Day Special kind of post. Hope you guys found this helpful and informative. Let us care for our environment and all that's in it. Paalam!
