'13 Reasons Why' Is it Good or Bad?

21 April

Hello Everybody! We can see on almost all social media platform the outrageous hype that the Netflix original series '13 Reasons Why' has been getting. With great attention comes great opinions, shall we say? People had been posting their comments on how actually helpful the show is to the viewers. And today, here I share to you my thoughts on the show.

Personally, I found the series to be really helpful. I think the series aims to RAISE AWARENESS regarding the effects of social aspects to ones mental health. It is for us to know how the people around you who might seem okay on a day-to-day basis could be a potential suicidal without you knowing. It shows how ones mental health could be really really sensitive to the things people do and think as a norm. In that case, the series also teaches us the lesson of how things like bullying and sexual assault are being trivialized nowadays. People at your school could be a victim of bullying yet the students think it is funny and just doing it for fun, yet it can actually cause somebody to lose their stuff and sense of living.

If the series showed content that could potentially trigger or influence suicidal tendencies, I guess they did it to show that COMMITTING SUICIDE is not easy. Suicide is not as simple as cutting your wrist, bleeding to death or even overdosing with pills. It is a tragic picture of death, pain and suffering. Also, it doesn't just end one life but could also stop and ruin the lives of people that cares about you that you don't even know about and won't know about if you commit suicide.

This topic is quite sentimental for me since I suffered with great depression as well and may or may not thought about the idea of suicide, I mean I didn't try or thought of killing myself but the idea of it actually crossed my mind. I am not professionally diagnosed as depressed but tests actually showed I was. The only difference between me and Hannah Baker? I told someone about it. Although I cried myself to sleep every single night, he was there listening to my endless sorrow. I was lonesome, yet in front of my friends, I tell jokes and smile as bright as the sunshine. He always make sure that after the gallons of tears I lost that night I'd be hearing his encouragements, and that situation actually reminded me about my foundation because it truly tested the strength of my faith.

One thing to keep in mind after watching the series, whether you might see it in a negative way or in a positive way, We need to be responsible for our actions and let us be sensitive about each other's mental health and wellness. We need to learn the lesson that the series wants us to learn.

                      Be informed.
                               Be mindful.
                                          Be responsible.
                                                    Be a helping hand.
